Royal William plan, 1830-1831.

Original working plan of the Royal William, reputed to be the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean entirely propelled by steam. Bound in folder with the plan is a letter from Archibald Bennett, son of the man who installed the engine of the ship and also a letter from George Goudie, son of James Goudie.

James Goudie, formerly of Quebec, Canada, built the vessel in 1830-31 and called it the Royal William in honor of the reigning sovereign of Great Britain. The vessel was designed as a steamship to sail between Quebec and Halifax; was towed to Montreal to have the engine installed by the firm of Bennett and Henderson, St. Mary's Foundry.
